Personal Reflection

I feel revolted to know that there are 100 million street children worldwide. It makes me feel fortunate to know that I live in a safe country and have more than I could ask for. Another factor that shocked me was that even in a first world country, as comforting as Australia, 13% of Australians live in poverty. What also discomforts me is 1.8 billion people worldwide are living in absolute poverty. Not many children in poorer countries are getting an education. It really saddens me because one of those children could be very intelligent and possible have a cure for cancer.

Recent studies reveal that as many as 300,000 Haitian children suffer from chronic malnutrition, and up to half of child deaths in the country are caused by starvation. Cross International is addressing the immediate needs of poor children across Haiti by providing vitamin- and nutrient-rich food. But we couldn’t do it without the help of our faithful supporters. May God bless you for your heartfelt compassion! “A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.” Proverbs 22:9

There are any posibilities to prevent poverty. A small amount of money from a country with a higer gross income can go a long way in poor countries. For example, $1 (USD) is equivelant to $923.95 (CDF- Congolese Francs). Putting trust and money into a organisation that supports the people suffering from poverty overseas will save the lives of the suffering. Even though it may be costy to travel overseas, the money someone puts into an organisation can be handed over to someone who can do great things with it, to help the needy. Many poor people will flourish off that money someone gave to an oranisation and the services the organisation does overseas for the less fortunate. For people struggling in Australia, it is not that hard to give up some of our unwanted possessions for people who may want or need them. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Around local towns there are also many fundraisers and charities set up to help the homeless people living in that certain town. St Vincent de Paul is an organisation that helps and supports the people in Australia that are living in poverty. They hand out food packages, give them phsycological support and basic needs- hygeine, education etc. Some people living with Poverty who live in Australia could be redeemed from it if someone stepped out of their lives to help others around them.
